Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne founded the Sarvodaya movement in Sri Lanka in 1958. For his work promoting nonviolent social transformation he was awarded the Niwano Peace Prize in Japan in 1992 and the Mahatma Gandhi Peace Prize in 1996. In 2007 he received the Sri Lankabhimanya, the highest National Honour of Sri Lanka.
